    Astonishing- The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) opposes labelling of GM foods

    Do you want to know the origins of your food?

    Do you want to know what processes have been used in manufacture, what additives, preservatives etc., have been used?

    Do you want to know if irradiation, microwaving and pasteurisation methods have been used?

    Do you want to know if your food comes from an area of environmental pollution?

    Do you want to know if your food is organic, and is free from an increasing amount of toxic and contaminated agrichemicals?

    Do you want to know if your food is from GM (genetically modified) sources, or if your dairy, poultry or meat products have been fed with GM foods?

    More importantly, do you want to know what your children and grandchildren are eating?

    I certainly want to know, and I will bet that a good majority of you would want to know.

    I was astonished to read that the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) opposes labelling of GM foods

    See details here http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/33057/title/AAAS--Don-t-Label-GM-Foods/

    We all know that in most modern countries labelling of the ingredients is required- why should GM foods be different?

    If absence of labelling for GM foods is accepted what is to stop the gradual elimination of the labelling of other ingredients?

    The premise of the AAAS is that labelling of GM foods would-

    "mislead and falsely alarm consumers."

    and they support their stance with the claim that-

    "Consuming foods containing ingredients from GM crops is no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques"

    This latter claim is highly controversial and far from proven. For some opposing and contradictory information see for example http://www.psrast.org/ and http://dmedia.ucsc.edu/~bsharris/film%20170a/proj3/monsanto/biotech-gmo/asp/globalOutlook.html

    I highly recommend the following documentary-Genetic Roulette- which can be viewed on YouTube

    I have made a comment the GM controversy and the failure of the pursuit of science to provide reliable consensus information on my website http://www.natural-medicine.ie/#/comment-and-analysis/4572422514

    Leaving aside the question of safety of GM foods, the important issue raised here is whether an association of scientists should be advocating a denial of our wishes to know what is in our food, which is a fundamental human right.

    The AAAS has published the following Mission Statement

    The AAAS seeks to "advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people." To fulfil this mission, the AAAS Board has set the following broad goals:

    • Enhance communication among scientists, engineers, and the public;

    • Promote and defend the integrity of science and its use;

    • Strengthen support for the science and technology enterprise;

    • Provide a voice for science on societal issues;

    • Promote the responsible use of science in public policy;

    • Strengthen and diversify the science and technology workforce;

    • Foster education in science and technology for everyone;

    • Increase public engagement with science and technology; and

    • Advance international cooperation in science.

    Has the AAAS gone beyond or violated its stated mission; could there be a hidden self-serving agenda involved?

    I would welcome your thoughts and comments which can be posted on my blog. http://www.natural-medicine.ie/#/blog/4572467493
